After recently receiving my certification as a “Recognized” BJCP Beer Judge, I had the chance to judge at my first competition, the Ontario Brewing Awards. It proved to be a great experience as I got to sit with more seasoned judges at the Beer Academy and go through some of the amazing beers that are coming out of this province. On the first of two nights we judged the Honey/ Maple category and the Amber Ales. On the second night we judged the Cream Ale category and the final round of the American IPA’s.
Last night was the Award ceremony at the beautiful Gladstone Hotel on Queen St. West. I was very eager to see which beers stood out as being the best of the bunch. Some of them were surprising, others were not. It was also great to see some new up and coming brewers/breweries make their mark.

Toronto’s beer scene is exploding at a furious pace. Beer related events are happening all across the city. Most of them are duly celebrating the commercial breweries, but that is not the whole story. Homebrewing is taking Toronto by storm, and few of these events, as of yet, have celebrated this burgeoning homebrewing scene. Brauhaus is here to change that.
Founded by Doug Appeldoorn, Crystal Luxmore, Scott & Nicole Stewart, and Carlos Santos, Brauhaus was created to celebrate homebrewers and to introduce people to the amazing beers that are being brewed in people’s kitchens and backyards in and around the city. They are a wonderful group of people who are passionate about their beer and are working hard to spread the gospel to all who will listen.
Homebrewers by nature push the envelope in ways that bigger brewers may find difficult, due to financial restrictions and/or the potential loses involved. Throw a bunch of strange herbs or fruit in there? sure! Throw 1/2lb of hops in at 10mins? sure! Use up some pumpkin from the fridge? Well you get the picture…
I had the honor, along with my fellow homebrewers, Zack Weinberg of Toronto Brewing, Brad Clifford, now head brew master at Get Well Bar, and Richard Sigesmund, to pour my Muddy York Porter and Hoptomology Pale Ale at the first inaugural Brauhaus this past November. We all had a blast sharing great beer, and meeting lots of new friends who share the common love of our favourite beverage.

The home brewing community has always been big on encouraging and supporting up and coming brewers. Learn 2 Brew Day is a testament to this spirit. Started in 1999 by the American Homebrew Association, it is an event held around the world to encourage people to come out and learn how to brew their own beer. Seasoned veterans and newbie’s alike, it’s a place to share ideas and to be inspired by new ones. Everybody brews just a little different, so there’s always something to see.
The 2012 Toronto Learn 2 Brew Event was hosted by Amsterdam Brewing at their new brewery location in Leaside. The folks at Amsterdam have always been huge supporters of the local homebrewing scene in Toronto. We sincerely thank them for being so generous with their time and their space. The new brewery looks fantastic and we look forward to many more years of great beer from Amsterdam!
About 10 homebrewers showed up bright and early on saturday morning, cars full of gear and gadgets, with apprentices in tow. Everything from a ‘3 tier gravity system’, to a fully automated ‘R.I.M.S system’, to a ‘brew in a bag system (B.I.A.B)‘ complete with a pully system to haul the spent grain out of the brewpot. There was a porter, an IPA, an ESB, a Hefeweizen and many other styles to watch as they came into being.

Summertime is abundant with Beer Festivals of all sorts. Every year there seem to be new ones popping up all over the place as people are getting inspired discovering the incredible diversity among Ontario’s growing craft beer scene.
One of the forerunners of the craft beer scene here in Ontario is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary, Creemore Springs Craft Brewery. Despite being bought out by Molson’s in 2005, the brewery has managed to maintain a certain level of credibility, thanks to the new owner’s respecting the success and capability that Creemore had established with their brewery.
Every summer, the brewery sponsor’s the “Copper Kettle Festival” that’s held in the main section of town. We’ve been meaning to visit for the last couple of years, so we decided to stop in while on our way up to the cottage for a week’s vacation. Creemore is a picturesque little town located about 2 hours northwest of Toronto. The homes are gorgeous, turn of the century style farmhouses with patterned brickwork. All of which have been incredibly maintained by their owners.

A last minute invite came to me from a good friend of mine to join her downtown in Toronto’s Historic Distillery District. The event was to take place at one of my favourite local breweries, Mill Street Brewery. It was to be a “Brew Masters Dinner”, featuring none other than the brew master himself, Joel Manning. Visiting the brewpub is enjoyable for many reasons. One is to take in the beautifully restored historic buildings of the old Gooderman and Worts Distillery District, the other is to enjoy the many different samplings of Mill Street’s beer. They have a wide array of beers available on tap that you don’t get to see in the LCBO or Beer Store, so it’s quite a treat. What was even more exciting, was that some of these not-so-available beers were going to be paired with some pretty incredible food.
We arrived a bit early, so we bellied up to the bar and I grabbed a Cobblestone Stout. I had only first tried it a week before at my friends pub, The Auld Spot, and loved it. The Auld Spot is a fantastic local pub along The Danforth that’s been open for about 15 years. Loved by the locals, filled with regulars, and always cheerful due in no small part from the owners friendly enthusiasm for craft beer and boutique style food. The beers on tap are specially picked by the owners, choosing beers that they would want to drink themselves. Among them are of course some of Mill Street’s offerings.
We met our rep Kim, who invited us to the dinner. She is the Toronto East sales rep for Mill Street, a very fun and lively person, full of conversation and laughs. After being seated, the dinner promptly started off with another one of my favourites, the Belgian Wit, accompanied by an appetizer of mussel fritter with a beer mustard aioli.
